Pedalling Towards a Greener Future: SKOPE's Success in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge

In a bid to pedal towards a more sustainable future, SKOPE enthusiastically embraced the Aotearoa Bike Challenge to collectively cycle as much as possible for transportation by 1st March 2024. As the challenge unfolded, SKOPE, along with countless other participants across New Zealand, embarked on a journey to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly modes of transportation.

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge, an initiative inviting all New Zealanders to log their bike rides for transportation throughout February, serves as a beacon of hope in the fight against climate change. By swapping car keys for handlebars, participants contribute to a monumental goal: riding one million kilometres collectively. The impact of this endeavour is profound, with potential CO2 savings of over 180,000 kilograms and the removal of the equivalent of 118 cars from the roads for an entire year. Moreover, the benefits extend beyond environmental preservation to encompass reduced traffic congestion, improved air quality, and enhanced physical well-being.

SKOPE's Bike Loan Programme

Building on this momentum, SKOPE introduced a new bike loan programme, providing employees with the opportunity to experience sustainable commuting firsthand. If you are considering commuting sustainably to work by bicycle, but don’t have a bike and would like to try it first,  SKOPE now has afew bikes that you can borrow to try it out. Please see your manager, or Andrew vanHerpt to borrow a bike.

If you have bikes or bike components that need mechanical fixing, or bikes that are no longer needed these can be donated, or be fixed to restore the bikes or components. By repurposing older second-hand bikes, the company encourages staff to embrace eco-friendly transportation options, furthering its commitment to a greener future.

Richard Goldsbury, whose efforts in refurbishing bikes provided newfound mobility to staff, deserves special recognition. Through his initiative, old bikes found new owners, breathing fresh life into sustainable commuting options. SKOPE acknowledges his invaluable contribution and encourages the community to support his endeavour by donating unused bikes or components for refurbishment.

As we reflect on the success of the Aotearoa Bike Challenge, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, supporters, and advocates for sustainability. Together, we have demonstrated that small actions can yield significant results in our journey towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
